KN, an 11-year-old girl from Udaypur district, faced a life-threatening health crisis that no child should have to endure. Her father, a daily wage laborer, struggled to afford even basic healthcare. When KN developed severe swelling over three months, she was admitted to a local hospital, only to be discharged without a clear diagnosis.

Her condition worsened, and she was referred to Patan Hospital in Lalitpur, Nepal, in a hypertensive crisis, experiencing generalized seizures. There, she was diagnosed with acute-on-chronic kidney failure. A crucial kidney biopsy was needed to determine the best course of treatment—but the cost of sending her biopsy specimen to an external pathology lab was beyond her family’s means.

Thanks to the support of Patan Hospital’s Social Service and funding from SLSF, her biopsy was processed, leading to a critical diagnosis of ANA-negative lupus-like nephritis. With this diagnosis, KN was finally able to receive the targeted treatment she desperately needed.

Stories like KN’s highlight the urgent need for expanded pediatric research and care in Nepal. Too many children face delays in diagnosis and treatment due to financial and logistical barriers. With your support, we can fund life-saving diagnostics, advance research, and provide critical care to children in need.
